Date:
Sep 16, 2009
Location: Saskatoon, SK
Wednesday September 16, 2009 and
Thursday September 17, 2009
Candle/Span Room, Atrium Building,
111 Research Drive, Innovation Place, Saskatoon
TRLabs and the IEEE Computer Chapter, with support from MITACS and Industry Canada, are pleased to present a workshop about Erlang, a general-purpose programming language and runtime environment with built-in support for concurrency, distribution, fault tolerance and incremental code loading. This makes Erlang very well suited for large distributed systems (e.g., for delivering robust and scalable Web applications) as well as multi-core embedded systems.
Presenters: Dong Liu (U of S), Dmytro Dyachuk (U of S / TRLabs), Flavio Ishii (UoS) and Dr. Ralph Deters (U of S / TRLabs)Description: After a brief introduction into the reasons for the growing interests into functional programming languages we will provide an overview of the key features of the Erlang programming language, its difference compared to Java, and discuss the impact they have on the production of highly scalable and fault-tolerant software. This will be followed by a Erlang hands-on session that will focus on the language basics, sequential and basic concurrent programming.
On the second day we will offer two addition hands-on sessions. The first session in the morning will focus on advanced concurrent programming, fault-management and the use of the Erlang OTP. The second session will focus on the use of databases (ETS, DTS, Mnesia), web tools (web machine, TSUNG) and software development issues within Erlang.
We encourage users to bring their laptops for the hands-on sessions and plan to discuss special issues within OTP, Mnesia, TSUNG based on the participant’s interest.
