Research Focus

eHealth

Information and communications technology is radically changing the way consumers access medical information and services, patients interact with their physicians, and physicians and other health care specialists interact with one another. In the not-too-distant future, the "digital hospital" will feature information screens connected to central databases, electronic medical records storage, 3D digital imaging instead of traditional x-rays, and hospital-wide wireless communications networks that will allow medical workers to access and update a patient care records from anywhere using handheld devices. TRLabs is working with a variety of partners in the health community to make this vision a reality. Current areas of research include clinical networks, medical informatics, telehealth and medical imaging.

Converged Digital Media

This focus area looks at how to evolve communication networks to provide seamless ubiquitous access, and become cognitive in their operation so they dynamically adapt to provide end users with customized services.

Strategic Sectors

This focus area is designed to support select, innovative new technologies that TRLabs believes align well with future commercialization potential. The technologies of interest should be disruptive in the sense that they have the potential to spawn significant, rapid and positive change in the status quo. Technologies and emerging applications currently being investigated in this area include nano technology, sustainable technologies which rely on information technologies, and the Smart Grid and associated residential resource management. Should industry support and involvement reach a sustainable threshold, a new vertical market focus area may emerge.
